Vocational training prepares young people for working life. After listening to the desires of each newly enrolled student, our team advises and guides them through the programs of their future professions. Currently, our vocational school offers these career tracks:
The vocational center aims to offer courses in fields that are most in demand in Rwanda. Along with the tracks that the vocational center currently offers, OPDE aims to add courses in Tourism, Hotel Cleaning Services, Plumbing, and Construction when circumstances allow.
The Vocational Center is located in an area called Karama in the Ruhashya Sector in the Huye District, and was built through the support of the Canadian NGO “L’Amie” in 2009. For over 9 years, our vocational students have received training from the center with strong, conclusive results. Young people are motivated by the practicality of their courses, which enables them to find work.
However, as many of the students at this point have already been reintegrated to their families, they often find themselves facing a difficult financial burden, as most are either heads of households or living in a very large family. This is why in 2009 UNICEF-Rwanda and the Firelight Foundation (USA) helped OPDE with the vocational training of two people per household that had reintegrated of child of OPDE or were in the process of doing so. As part of its Action Plan Governance and Social Protection program, UNICEF also financially supported the class of 2009, which successfully graduated 30 students.
